The college football playoff committee couldn't decide between the 4th and 5th best teams, Baylor and TCU so they picked the 6th best team and put them into the playoff. The justification was that Ohio State played a 13th game that was a decisive conference championship.
De facto, they've made a conference championship a requirement. The Big 12 is trying to figure out a way to have one and the sports yacks are talking endlessly about an 8 team playoff ... and half of them are talking about how impossible it is. Hey, everyone, the FCS has a playoff with 24 teams every year and works just fine.
An extra week would have to be added to the schedule to have an 8 team playoff. If you're already there, it would take no additional weeks to have a 16 team playoff.
Here's how it would work:
13th Game - Already existing conference championship week.
The 5 major conferences have their playoffs. That's 10 teams.
The committee would pick 6 teams to have a 3 game "wildcard" playoff.
14th Game - This is the one, new week.
The 8 remaining teams play.
15th Game
Already existing 4 team playoff week.
15th Game
Already existing Championship.
This would have the additional benefit of reducing the committee to selecting only the 6 wildcard teams. They might seed the teams depending on how it is structured. I suspect that would be a lot less controversial.
This would create 10 games that would take place at the 6 major bowls in the playoff rotation or other locations - the 3 wildcards and the 4 game quarterfinal followed by the 2 semis and championship that already exist. Probably, the conference championships would remain at a conference chosen neutral field.
Sounds like a lot of fun to me and a lot better than the stinker we are being served this year. Let's hope the Oregon vs. Alabama final is entertaining after they blowout their first opponents. Go Ducks!
